PFB Rust Converter Primer
Flat · 1 Gallon
Professional-grade rust converter that chemically transforms iron oxide into a stable, paintable surface. Eliminates the need for sandblasting or complete rust removal. Bonds directly to rusted steel, iron, and aluminum surfaces. Provides a protective primer coat ready for topcoat application. Ideal for boat hulls, trailers, dock hardware, and marine metal structures.
PFB Rust Converter Primer is a professional-grade chemical rust treatment that transforms iron oxide (rust) into a stable, paintable surface without sandblasting or complete mechanical rust removal. It bonds directly to rusted steel, iron, and aluminum surfaces and converts the corrosion into a dark, protective compound that serves as a primer coat for topcoat application. This product eliminates hours of grinding and sanding on rusty boat trailers, dock hardware, steel keels, and marine metal structures. It is the first step in restoring neglected metal surfaces to like-new condition.
Surface Preparation
Remove loose, flaking rust with a wire brush or scraper — tight rust can remain
Clean the surface to remove dirt, grease, and salt deposits
No need to sand down to bare metal — Rust Converter bonds to the rust itself
Ensure the surface is dry before application
For best results, remove any existing paint that is peeling or poorly adhered
How to Apply
Application method
Brush or roller. Work the product into pitted and textured rust surfaces. Spray application is possible with airless equipment.
Number of coats
1-2 coats depending on rust severity. Heavy rust may require 2 coats with 4 hours between.
Dry time
4-6 hours to convert rust. 24 hours before topcoating.
Temperature
Apply between 45°F and 95°F. Works in a wider temperature range than most primers.
Coverage
180-220 sq ft per gallon depending on surface roughness and rust severity.

Do I need to remove all the rust before applying Rust Converter?
No — that is the whole point. Remove loose, flaking rust but tight rust can remain. The converter chemically reacts with iron oxide and transforms it into a stable black compound.
Can I use Rust Converter as a final coat?
No. Rust Converter is a primer product. It must be topcoated within 30 days to provide long-term protection. Without a topcoat, the converted surface will eventually re-rust.
Does Rust Converter work on aluminum?
Rust Converter is designed to react with iron oxide. It will bond to aluminum surfaces but does not chemically convert aluminum corrosion. For aluminum, use PFB Marine Metal Primer directly.
How is this different from over-the-counter rust treatments?
PFB Rust Converter uses a higher concentration of active ingredients and better resin chemistry than consumer products. It produces a harder, more durable primer film that holds up in marine environments — not just garage conditions.
Can I weld over Rust Converter?
No. Remove Rust Converter from any areas that will be welded. The converted compound and primer resin will contaminate the weld. Grind back 2 inches from any weld joint.
